It is not often that a large telecom provider refreshes its offer, but this week Vodafone made a huge splash on the market. The revamp involves overhauling the most popular SIM-only mobile plans, including scrapping the one truly unlimited data option.
So what’s actually different about Vodafone’s new mobile plans? Here’s the download.
Instead of a series of scaled options, Vodafone has streamlined its unlimited SIM-only plans into three offerings: Small, Medium and Large.
These plans are the same as the previous $45 Lite+, $55 Super, and $65 Super+ postpaid tiers, but with some feature changes like data caps, mobile network speeds, and international calling limits. Plan prices have not changed.
All three plans have received a huge boost in fast data, but once customers go through the limit, they’re stuck at 2 Mbps (previously capped at 10 Mbps). That’s enough to send an email, but good luck streaming videos on your way home from work.
The changes do away with Vodafone’s popular $85 Ultra plan (which offers truly unlimited data with no speed caps, but with fair use terms) and the $40 Lite plan.
Customers currently on one of the terminated subscriptions will be able to keep their service and features for the time being, as long as they don’t cancel. New customers can choose from the new options.
While the plan changes lure Vodafone customers to higher entry-level prices and greater data options, the telco still appears overall to be the cheapest option of the Big Three mobile networks (although prices vary on a case-by-case basis).
Regional customers may find Vodafone’s network a little too patchy compared to Telstra and Optus, and customers who regularly call abroad on a budget will be disappointed that Vodafone’s new Small Plan has done away with international minutes.
However, if you’re looking for value and it fits your lifestyle, Vodafone remains fiercely competitive – it’s even scored a few wins at the 2022 Mozo Experts Choice Mobile Awards.
