NRL news 2023, Cody Ramsey ruled out of St George Illawarra Dragons season with illness

St George Illawarra young gun Cody Ramsey will miss the entire 2023 NRL season due to illness.

Ramsey has been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

The Dragons confirmed that the 22-year-old attacker will not be able to play football for at least 12 months.

Ramsey was hospitalized before Christmas after falling ill. He first noticed something was wrong during a long run during a summer training session.

“Unfortunately, this ultimately required major intestinal surgery. This operation was successful, but several follow-up procedures will be required in the coming season,” the club said in a statement.

Ramsey is under contract with the club for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

But while he won’t be available to them this year, Sydney Morning Herald reporter Michael Chammas says the club won’t necessarily be compensated.

“I don’t know if they will get an exemption from the salary cap,” Chammas told Wide World of Sports’ 2GB radio.

“If the Dragons get dispensation, Ramsey will have to retire medically… Ramsey doesn’t want to retire.”

Ramsey made his NRL debut in 2020 but only played three games for the Dragons that season.

Although he started out as a winger, he played half of last season at fullback and was expected to wear the Red V’s number 1 jersey this season.

That spot is now expected to go to Tyrell Sloan.
