As Meta tries to merge users with its metaverse experience, you can expect it to promote the use of avatars in more places, as a means of getting people more accustomed to engagement through their digital images.

Today it’s Instagram’s turn to get on the avatar train, with a new feature that lets you add an alternate avatar profile picturewhich users can then “flip” in-stream.

As you can see in this example, the new “dynamic” profile pictures, as Instagram calls them, now include your regular image and an alternate avatar view, helping users become more accustomed to digitally representing themselves in the app.

Meta has evolved its 3D avatars over time, with a view to broader metaverse interaction, where eventually more of us will participate through these cartoonish doppelgängers that we can dress up and customize as we see fit.

This follows trends among younger internet users, who are now used to communicating via avatars in game worlds such as Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite. It follows logically that as these users get older, it will become more and more natural to engage through digital characters, which is a key element in Meta’s metaverse push, to move us towards more interactive, immersive experiences, whether through AR, VR or just your PC.

Actually, by promoting the use of avatars as a form of digital identity, Meta can then encourage more people to participate through their digital characters, which will be an important part of metaverse engagement.

Metas has already added a range of avatar stickers and other comment tools to help users become more familiar with this process, with these dynamic profile pictures as a next step.

It’s an interesting initiative, and it’ll be just as interesting to see who exactly uses the option and how many people start adding avatar PFPs to their profiles.

Select to add an avatar image on the other side of your profile picture ‘Edit Profile’ from your profile page in the app. From there you will see a new option to edit your photo or your avatar at the top of the screen.

As you can see here, if you don’t have an active avatar, Instagram will walk you through the process of creating one to add to the other side of your profile picture.

When people visit your profile, the image will automatically flip once you activate the option.

It’s a simple way to drive more avatar engagement and another step toward Meta’s next-level vision.
