Awards season comes into full focus this morning with the reveal of the 2023 Oscar nominations.
As the Academy revealed earlier this month, 301 feature films were eligible for recognition this year. To be eligible to apply, a feature film must have opened in what is defined as a “commercial movie theater” in at least one of the six following metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County, the City of New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami , and/or Atlanta. The window for such showings, meanwhile, was from January 1 to December 1 of last year. In addition, eligible films must have been shown in the same theater for a minimum of seven consecutive days.
This year’s nominations come in two weeks after the Golden Globes aired, with this year’s ceremony hosted by Jerrod Carmichael. Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film won Best Picture – Drama The Fables, which has received much (and well-deserved) acclaim since its release. Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, meanwhile, went to Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin.
Other big winners of the night were Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, who were both honored for their performance in Daniels’ A24 smash Everything Everywhere Everything at once.
Voting for the 95th Academy Awards ended on January 17. The ceremony itself will take place at the Dolby Theater in Ovation Hollywood on March 12.
