The Brisbane Heat have failed to secure a sure win against the Hobart Hurricanes after botching their pursuit in Launceston.

The shock loss threatens the team’s home final hopes as they now depend on the Stars beating the Thunder on Wednesday night to retain fourth spot on the BBL ladder and the reward of a home final.

After the Hurricanes got going and went 9-120, the Heat came down to needing just 19 runs from the last 24 balls, and with six wickets up their sleeves.

Victory still looked likely with a dozen more balls to go, but then Hurricanes spinner Tim David came up with an astonishing final to win the game.

The right-arm off-spinner produced a run-out with three balls remaining to turn the game on its head.

Brisbane then fell short of Hobart’s total by two points.

“This is unbelievable,” said Brendon Julian in commentary for Fox Cricket.

“The Heat lost the unlosable there,” added Mark Waugh.

“The Hurricanes got out of prison there.”

The Heat’s innings didn’t start well with Usman Khawaja batting a lead and being caught by Mac Wright off Riley Meredith for 10.

As the wickets began to tumble with four overs remaining, the Hurricanes got a sniff of victory, but it still didn’t feel convincing enough to change the likely outcome.

That was until David went on the offensive in the final over – prompting Matt Kuhnemann for a duck.

Allrounder James Bazley hit one six in his 10 runs, but had four punt balls left in the final.

The Heat needed four runs off the last ball to clinch victory, but could only manage one to cough up victory.

Brisbane has become infamous for taking defeat out of the jaws of victory in matches they have well and truly in control.

Middle range batter Sam Hain was hit on the wrist by a pitch from Meredith that could rule him out for the Heat’s playoff finals.
