Australia Day honours for Today’s longest serving host

The one and only Steve Liebmann has revealed what kept him in the Today guest seat for more than two decades.

The show’s original presenter has been recognized at this year’s Australia Day award for his contribution to the Australian media industry over more than fifty years.

Liebmann told current hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo that even with a wake-up call at 3am for 22 years, he never once considered his role on Today “work”.

“I can honestly say there was never a day where the alarm went off and I thought, ‘I don’t want to go to work’ – because it really wasn’t work,” he said.

The “boy from Cooma” began his professional career in national radio in 1957, then read news on regional and city stations before moving into television.

It wasn’t long before he took on the inaugural role of Today host alongside Sue Kellerman for the show’s 1982 debut.

“I was very lucky, I had great partners,” he said of his co-hosts for 22 years.

As the latest addition to the show, Sarah earned the endorsement of one of the most famous faces in Australian morning television history.

“I think you’re doing pretty well,” he said.

“I like the way you keep him honest – I love it.”

Sarah told Liebmann that Karl joked he had “only four years left” before he broke the Today legend’s record, but said the audience will be able to tell if their chemistry isn’t real.

“It’s going to be a really professional marriage and it has to work,” he told Sarah.

“You can’t fool the audience there — they can tell if you’re faking it.”
